FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

February 25, 2023 - The Coalition of Citizens and Organizations Committed to Railway Safety of Lac-Mégantic is appalled by the harmful consequences of the recent derailment and chemical spill seriously affecting the population of East Palestine in Ohio. In this context, our Coalition of Lac-Mégantic supports the local population of East Palestine through this ordeal, so that they receive all the necessary support from the authorities, as well as the compensation to which they are entitled from the railway company responsible for this environmental disaster!

The Coalition of Citizens and Organizations Committed to Railway Safety of Lac-Mégantic calls on the U.S. Congress to strengthen regulation of the transportation of hazardous materials by rail by reducing the length and speed of trains and reinstating rules favoring the installation of electric braking systems on rail cars throughout the United States.

La Coalition Rail Safety Campaign

La Coalition’s Rail Safety Campaign works to protect people, air, water, and land from the negative impacts of hazardous substances transported by rail. The Rail Safety Campaign conforms to the guidelines set by the Clean Power Lake County community agreement and includes underserved communities as identified under Environmental Justice policy to reduce persistent environmental health disparities.

In order to plan for the unique needs that will arise in the event of a hazmat incident, La Coalition engages legislators, emergency responders, and administrators at schools and other public facilities located near rail corridors where toxic and explosive substances are transported or stored.
