ACTION ALERT: Tell PHMSA to Ban Transporting LNG By Rail

We have until December 23rd to tell the PHMSA to ban transporting LNG by rail. Tell PHMSA that fracked gas trains are a public safety hazard and threat in the fight against the climate crisis.

Help us end a Trump-era rule allowing dangerous fracked liquified natural gas (LNG) to be transported by train through our communities.1 Thanks to activists like you, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has proposed suspending the Trump Administration’s rule.

The oil and gas industry has been accelerating the export of fracked gas to overseas markets. Transporting LNG by rail gives the industry another pathway to get its risky, dangerous products to market — at puts communities at greater risk. If there was a railway accident, it could lead to an inextinguishable fire that local emergency responders are ill-equipped to handle, putting communities bordering the railway route — often communities most impacted by pollution — in harm’s way.2

PHMSA is proposing a temporary ban — ending on June 30, 2024 or until a new rulemaking takes its place — on moving LNG along our railways. This is an important pause of LNG by rail, but it needs to be a permanent halt. Now is the time to make your voice heard.

Take action to bring back the ban on moving fracked LNG by rail!

Research points to the ways that the expansion of gas exports leads to higher home heating costs which place a disproportionate energy burden on communities of color who already pay higher energy costs, due to housing discrimination and other forms of systemic racism. The U.S. Energy Information Administration predicts U.S. households will spend 30% more on heating their homes with fracked gas this winter.3

LNG is a major threat to our climate, too. Fracked gas is largely composed of methane, and LNG is more than 80 times more harmful to our atmosphere than CO2 in driving the climate crisis. The most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report emphasized the need to focus on cutting methane emissions in order to avert the worst of the climate crisis.4

Increasing and expanding LNG transport directly conflicts with the Biden Administration’s commitments to environmental justice and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The health and safety of our communities and our climate should be a top priority.

We have until December 23rd to tell the PHMSA to ban transporting LNG by rail. Tell PHMSA that fracked gas trains are a public safety hazard and threat in the fight against the climate crisis.

Thank you for taking action,
